Dual Wheel Systems

In the current market there are various types of dual wheel systems available, which means a system whereby an extra wheel is mounted next to the existing tractor wheel. The increasingly heavy combinations of tractors and agricultural tools are faced with many problems under poor terrain circumstances. A dual wheel system can offer the solution. Although the current trend is increasingly towards wider tyres, the use of a dual wheel system still offers a practical and economical solution. The advantages of mounting a wheel next to the existing tractor wheel include:

  • Greater tensile strength
  • Less rutting or damage to the ground structure
  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Less slip and therefore less tyre wear

Molcon Dual Wheels: star system

In 1950, Pieter Krijn Mol, the father of various members of the current senior management, developed a star system for mounting a second wheel next to the existing tractor wheel. This universal quick release system for dual wheels was patented and became an international success. The star system is still used as the perfect solution for tractors between 50 and 200 hp. With the star system, a star with levers is welded into a bare rim and the levers can be hooked onto the existing tractor wheel in direct assembly or in an all-position ring. The entire unit is then tightened with a spindle. The advantages of the Molcon dual wheel system include:

  • Superfast mounting and removal
  • Universal system, depends only on the tyre size
  • No loose parts or hooks and eyes
  • Flexible system always adaptable to the original rim

Clamp-on dual wheels

The clamp-on dual wheel system is especially for heavy tractors between 100 and 250 hp and loaders. With the clamp-on system, a cylinder is placed in the existing tractor wheel. The cylinder has a rim for the dual wheel tyre. In this rim, there is a system with threaded rods for clamping the unit together. The nuts of the existing tractor wheel are replaced by eye nuts into which a hook is inserted with a threaded rod that connects the two halves. At the end of the threaded rod there is a quick-lock that can be fixed after clamping on by means of a dowel pin. The advantages of the clamp-on system include:

  • Maximum ground protection
  • Better traction = less fuel consumption
  • Greater stability = increased safety
  • Lower tyre pressure = driving comfort and larger “footprint”
  • Prevents rapid tyre wear

Cylinder couplings

Unlike the other dual wheel systems, with cylinder couplings the dual wheel forms a fully fledged agricultural wheel and can therefore be used separately as well. The two wheels are connected by a cylinder coupling. This cylinder coupling is made up of two parts that are each screwed into a wheel. The part with teeth is screwed into the dual wheel, and the part with holes, in the tractor wheel. Via a spindle, both parts are turned so that the teeth fall perfectly into the holes, all of which is secured with a dowel pin. The standard version (KN180) is suitable for tractors up to 190 hp. For tractors up to 380 hp, there is a heavier version (KN 360) whereby the cylinder coupling is fitted with an extra disk. The advantages of cylinder couplings include:

  • Super-fast mounting requiring less manpower and the use of just a single spindle
  • Fits together in any position
  • Various intervals possible
  • Highly suitable for in-row cultivation
